Step by step

The full walkthrough

  1. 01

Step 1 — Build the front and back matter

In order: half title, title page, copyright page, dedication, table of contents.

  2. 02

Step 2 — Format the DOCX manuscript

Use Word styles. No double spaces, no manual indents. Page break before every chapter.

  3. 03

    Step 3 — Export a print-ready PDF

Trim size first (6x9 default). Embed all fonts. Start page numbers at chapter 1.

  4. 04

Step 4 — Design (or commission) a cover

Title legible at 100-pixel thumbnail. For print, calculate spine width from page count.

  5. 05

Step 5 — Write the metadata

Title and subtitle do the SEO work. Pick two categories. Seven keyword phrases.
